God is about to deliver a shocking message to Jerusalem, using a startling metaphor. It’s not about their noble lineage, but their deeply flawed character.
The Lord God declares to Jerusalem, 'Your origin and your birth are of the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.' This isn't about geography or even literal parentage.
A Figure of Speech
The original Hebrew uses words that relate to 'digging out' or 'cutting stone.' Think of it like being hewn from a quarry. God isn't saying Abraham was an Amorite; He's using these terms to highlight Jerusalem's spiritual parentage and character. The Amorites and Hittites were among the most corrupt peoples of Canaan, known for their idolatry and wickedness. By calling them Jerusalem's 'father' and 'mother,' God is saying Jerusalem inherited their sinful nature and adopted their abominable practices.
More Than Just Birthright
This imagery powerfully conveys that Jerusalem’s spiritual identity was not found in its chosen status or its noble ancestors like Abraham. Instead, its character was deeply intertwined with the pagan cultures it was meant to displace and remain separate from. It's a devastating indictment: their spiritual roots were impure, their moral compass was skewed, and their 'birth' into God's favor was overshadowed by the very sins they were called to reject.
