Ezekiel 13:8-10

What does Ezekiel 13:8-10 mean?

God's declaration "I am against you" isn't just a statement of opposition, but a powerful, active pronouncement that He is coming against them. This isn't about divine disapproval; it's about divine intervention to punish their deceptive words and visions that lead people astray.

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “Because you have uttered falsehood and seen lying visions, therefore behold, I am against you, declares the Lord GOD. My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and who give lying divinations. They shall not be in the council of my people, nor be enrolled in the register of the house of Israel, nor shall they enter the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord GOD. Precisely because they have misled my people, saying, ‘Peace,’ when there is no peace, and because, when the people build a wall, these prophets smear it with whitewash,

What Ezekiel 13:8-10 means

The Lord is directly addressing false prophets who are deceiving the people with comforting lies and fake visions. These prophets have claimed divine messages, but their words are hollow and misleading, leading people astray and fostering a false sense of security. Because of their deceit, God declares His direct opposition, promising judgment for their actions.

The Unsettling Weight of God's Opposition

When God declares Himself 'against' someone, it's not a passive stance. It’s an active, determined opposition that carries immense weight.

An Active Adversary

The phrase 'I am against you' isn't just a statement of disapproval; it's a declaration of God's active intervention. For the false prophets, this meant God would actively work to thwart their plans and bring their lies to light. This isn't a God who stands by idly when His name is misused or His people are deceived.

Divine Judgment in Action

The commentaries highlight that God's opposition is not merely emotional but manifests in tangible judgment. His 'hand' would be against them, signifying not just enmity but a powerful, forceful action to punish their deception. This is a stark reminder that God takes the misuse of His prophetic office very seriously.

The Danger of Lies and False Visions

The core of God's anger here stems from specific actions: uttering falsehood and seeing lying visions. What makes these so offensive to God?

Corrupting God's Word

False prophets didn't just tell lies; they presented them as divine messages. They 'uttered falsehood' and 'seen lying visions,' meaning they twisted truth and claimed divine authority for their own fabrications. This wasn't just misinformation; it was an assault on God's integrity and His people's trust in Him.
