Why would God's presence leave the very place built for Him? It wasn't a sudden exit, but a deliberate, sorrowful withdrawal.
Ezekiel witnesses a heart-wrenching scene: the visible manifestation of God's glory, the Shekinah, begins to leave the Temple.
A Slow Retreat
This isn't an instant vanishing act. The glory first moves from the inner sanctuary to the threshold of the house (Ezekiel 10:4), and now, it departs from the threshold.
Not an Abandonment
This departure is a consequence of the people's sin and the Temple's defilement. God doesn't abandon His people abruptly; He withdraws His manifest presence as a judgment, but the vision shows a lingering, a 'respite' (as Benson notes), before the final judgment. It's a sign that judgment is coming, but it’s not a total abandonment of His covenant promises yet.
