Pharaoh saw a miracle, yet his heart remained hardened. How does human resistance echo God's power?
Pharaoh's response to the serpent miracle is a stark example of a heart refusing to yield, even when confronted with undeniable divine power.
The Illusion of Control
Pharaoh's magicians were able to replicate the miracle, casting down their own staffs that also became serpents. This allowed Pharaoh to cling to a false sense of parity, believing his own 'wise men' and their powers could match God's. It was a dangerous self-deception, seeking comfort in imitation rather than submitting to the truth.
God's Purpose in Resistance
The commentaries reveal that Pharaoh's heart was already set. The miracle didn't cause his hardness, but rather revealed and solidified it. God, in His sovereignty, used Pharaoh's entrenched resistance not to excuse his sin, but to further display His own power and judgment. The repeated hardening, whether self-inflicted or divinely permitted, served to highlight the futility of opposing the Almighty.
