Exodus 4:14-17

What does Exodus 4:14-17 mean?

God's "anger" here isn't a loss of temper, but a deep, paternal displeasure with Moses's prolonged excuses, highlighting how even righteous hesitancy can become an obstacle to obedience. He then reminds Moses that Aaron, identified as "the Levite," possesses the very speaking ability Moses lacks, ready to be his voice and a new sign of God's provision.

Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses and he said, “Is there not Aaron, your brother, the Levite? I know that he can speak well. Behold, he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. You shall speak to him and put the words in his mouth, and I will be with your mouth and with his mouth and will teach you both what to do. He shall speak for you to the people, and he shall be your mouth, and you shall be as God to him. And take in your hand this staff, with which you shall do the signs.”

What Exodus 4:14-17 means

After Moses expresses his reluctance and perceived inability to speak effectively to Pharaoh, God's anger flares not in rejection, but in a firm redirection. God reminds Moses of his brother Aaron, who is indeed eloquent and is even now coming to meet him, promising that Aaron will be glad to see him. This divine adjustment acknowledges Moses's weakness while also establishing the partnership God intends for leading His people out of Egypt.

When Self-Doubt Becomes Displeasing

Moses, a man we admire for his faith, is met with God's anger. What turned God's displeasure towards him?

It's natural to feel doubt, but when that doubt causes us to hesitate or resist God's clear call, it becomes displeasing to Him.

More Than Modesty

Moses had already expressed his lack of eloquence, and God had promised to be with his mouth (Exodus 4:10-12). Yet, Moses still pushed back, asking God to send someone else (Exodus 4:13). This wasn't just a humble acknowledgment of his weakness; it bordered on stubbornness and a refusal to fully trust God's provision.

The Cost of Hesitation

God's anger, described as 'kindled,' shows His serious displeasure. This wasn't about Moses's ability, but his response. While God can use anyone, He desires our willing participation. Delaying or refusing, even with excuses of inadequacy, can lead to a loss of honor or a shared role that might have been ours alone.

Aaron: The Gift of Eloquence and Shared Ministry

God doesn't just point out Moses's failing; He immediately provides a solution. Who is Aaron, and why is his presence so significant?

Aaron is presented not just as a capable speaker, but as a divinely appointed partner for Moses.

God's Provision

God addresses Moses's weakness by introducing Aaron, highlighting his ability to 'speak well.' This doesn't necessarily mean Aaron was a perfect orator, but he possessed a fluency and readiness of speech that Moses lacked. God knows our limitations and provides what we need, even bringing people into our lives to help.
