Exodus 4:10-16

What does Exodus 4:10-16 mean?

Moses’s objection isn’t just about a lack of eloquence, but a deeper feeling of being fundamentally unprepared, even after God’s direct commissioning. He stresses that this unreadiness existed "heretofore" and persists "since you have spoken," highlighting that divine encounter hasn't magically altered his natural disposition, making him doubt his suitability for such a monumental task.

But Moses said to the LORD, “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.” Then the LORD said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.” But he said, “Oh, my Lord, please send someone else.” Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses and he said, “Is there not Aaron, your brother, the Levite? I know that he can speak well. Behold, he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. You shall speak to him and put the words in his mouth, and I will be with your mouth and with his mouth and will teach you both what to do. He shall speak for you to the people, and he shall be your mouth, and you shall be as God to him.

What Exodus 4:10-16 means

God has just revealed Himself to Moses, given him signs, and commanded him to go to Pharaoh and demand the release of the Israelites. Moses, however, is overwhelmed and repeatedly expresses his inadequacy for such a monumental task, leading into his specific objection about his lack of eloquence. He fears he cannot effectively communicate God's message to powerful rulers or even to his own people.

God's Call vs. My Competence

Moses felt he was the least qualified person for the job God was handing him. Have you ever felt that way when God presented a task?

Here, Moses voices a very human objection: 'I'm not good with words.' He expresses a deep insecurity about his speaking ability, stating he's 'slow of speech and of tongue.' It’s fascinating that even after witnessing God’s power through miracles like the burning bush and the staff-to-snake transformation, Moses still defaults to his perceived personal deficiency.

This isn't just about being shy; it's about feeling fundamentally unequipped. The scholars note that 'man of words' (Hebrew: ish devarim) signifies someone who has words readily available, speaking smoothly and persuasively. Moses felt he lacked this essential skill, believing it made him unfit for such a monumental task. He wasn't just saying he was a bit nervous; he was saying he was fundamentally unsuited by nature for public address and persuasion. This highlights a common struggle: when God calls us to something, our first instinct can be to look inward at our weaknesses rather than outward to God’s strength.

God's Power Over Human Limitations

Moses thought his 'slow tongue' was a deal-breaker for God’s plan. But God’s response wasn’t to find someone else – it was to equip Moses.

The commentators point out that God's reaction to Moses' objection is significant. While Moses sees his lack of eloquence as a disqualifier, God sees it as an opportunity to display His power. The text reveals God’s direct question: 'Who has made man's mouth? Has not I, the LORD?' (Exodus 4:11, though not in the provided text, it’s the immediate follow-up). This is God reminding Moses that the very ability to speak, and any perceived deficit in it, is entirely under His sovereign control.
