Exodus 35:4-9

What does Exodus 35:4-9 mean?

This verse isn't just Moses relaying instructions; it’s the beginning of something new. By starting with "This is the thing that the LORD has commanded," Moses is grounding their entire project of building the Tabernacle in God's direct authority, reminding them that this isn't a human endeavor but a divine undertaking. It emphasizes that obedience, not just generosity, is the heart of their offering.

Moses said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “This is the thing that the LORD has commanded. Take from among you a contribution to the LORD. Whoever is of a generous heart, let him bring the LORD’s contribution: gold, silver, and bronze; blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen; goats’ hair, tanned rams’ skins, and goatskins; acacia wood, oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense, and onyx stones and stones for setting, for the ephod and for the breastpiece.

What Exodus 35:4-9 means

After the people's grievous sin with the golden calf and the subsequent judgment, Moses is now re-establishing God's covenant and commands. He's gathered the entire community to announce the details for constructing the Tabernacle, emphasizing that it's not a human project but directly from the LORD's instruction. This passage kicks off a renewed focus on worship and obedience, detailing the materials and skilled labor needed for God's dwelling place among them.

God's Command Becomes Your Invitation

Moses stands before the entire Israelite community, and his message is direct. But what does 'This is the thing that the LORD has commanded' really mean for us today?

When Moses addresses the congregation in Exodus 35:4, he's not just relaying a bureaucratic order. He's presenting a divine invitation.

From Directive to Delight

God's commands aren't meant to be a burden, but an opportunity. Here, the command to build the Tabernacle is framed as a specific 'thing' the Lord wants done. This wasn't a suggestion; it was God's expressed will. Yet, the immediate follow-up in the text (which we'll see more of) isn't about forced labor, but about willing hearts.

The Divine Blueprint

This 'thing' God commanded was the detailed plan for the Tabernacle – a place for God's presence to dwell among His people. It was an elaborate, sacred structure, and the instructions given previously (in Exodus 25-31) were precise. Moses is now calling the people to participate in bringing this divine blueprint to life.

Why Now? The Timing of God's Request

The Israelites had just experienced incredible deliverance, but they'd also faced deep failure. Why was Moses bringing up this building project now?

The placement of this command in Exodus 35 is significant. It follows the devastating incident of the golden calf (Exodus 32) and the subsequent judgment and reconciliation. This context is crucial.
