It often starts small. A little concession here, a minor adjustment there. But God saw the end from the beginning.
The word 'snare' is powerful. It implies something that traps or entangles, often subtly. God knew that for Israel, making alliances with the Canaanites wouldn't just be a bad decision; it would be a trap that would lead to their spiritual downfall.
The commentaries highlight this: if they married their children to the Canaanites, they would soon be 'espousing their gods.' The danger wasn't just in the outward actions but in the inward heart.
God’s people were to be a distinct nation, a light in the midst of surrounding darkness. Compromising with the surrounding culture, even through seemingly innocent agreements, would inevitably lead to adopting their beliefs and practices. The snare was designed to catch them, to pull them away from their unique calling and into spiritual ruin.
