What's easy to miss is the profound value the people suddenly placed on God's presence. Though they had previously shrunk from it and even angered God with their idolatry, hearing that God would only send an angel, not go with them Himself, caused them deep grief and mourning. Their immediate act of stripping off their ornaments wasn't just about sadness; it was a public renunciation of comfort and beauty, signaling they understood that no earthly adornment could replace the presence of the Lord.
When the people heard this disastrous word, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments. For the LORD had said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you. So now take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do with you.’” Therefore the people of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God has just told Moses that He will not go with them Himself, but will send an angel instead, due to their stiff-necked nature and the potential for God's immediate wrath. Upon hearing this news, the people reacted with deep sorrow, mourning the loss of God's direct presence and signaling their repentance by discarding their adornments. This immediate reaction sets the stage for Moses' intensified intercession to regain God's favor and presence for the people.
Imagine hearing that your greatest protection and guide will be replaced by a lesser one. How would you react?
The people of Israel heard from Moses that God would no longer go with them into the Promised Land, but would only send an angel. This wasn't good news; it was 'disastrous' or 'evil tidings.'
What Made It So Bad?
What do the things we wear or display say about our state of heart?
The verse mentions that 'no man put on his ornaments.' This wasn't just about jewelry; it was a profound statement about their national and personal identity.
