Exodus 33:18-23

What does Exodus 33:18-23 mean?

Moses doesn't just ask to see God's "majesty" in a general sense; he uses the word "glory," implying a desire to see the visible manifestation of God's presence and power, something beyond his previous experiences. This isn't just about knowing more, but seeing God in a way that confirms His presence and power with the people, even after their rebellion.

Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The LORD.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” And the LORD said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”

What Exodus 33:18-23 means

Having just secured God's renewed commitment to lead His people, Moses, emboldened by their restored favor, makes a deeply personal request. He asks not just to know God's presence, but to truly see His glory, a desire kindled by their intimate communion but not yet fully satisfied. God grants this extraordinary request, but with essential limitations, revealing Himself in a way that Moses can perceive without perishing.

The Deepening Desire for God

Moses had already experienced incredible intimacy with God, hearing His voice and seeing His presence. Yet, he still longed for more. What drives this insatiable hunger for God?

Sometimes, the more we encounter God, the more we realize how much more there is to know. Moses, after walking with God 'face to face,' still wasn't satisfied.

An Appetite That Grows

The text highlights that Moses' previous encounters with God – communing on the mountain, hearing God's voice – only sharpened his desire. It wasn't a sign of doubt, but of a soul awakened to a deeper reality.
This is a beautiful picture of spiritual growth. Like a good meal whetting the appetite, encountering God's presence makes us crave more of Him. We move from knowing about God to wanting to truly know Him.
Moses wasn't asking out of mere curiosity; he wanted to be better equipped for his monumental task of leading Israel. He desired a deeper understanding of God's character and power to inspire confidence and faithfulness.

The Limits of Human Sight

Moses asked to 'see' God's glory, but God's response reveals a crucial truth: some visions are too intense for us. What does this tell us about God's nature and ours?

God's glory is so magnificent and pure that direct, unshielded human eyes cannot behold it and survive. This isn't because God is hiding, but because of His overwhelming holiness and power.
