God's declaration that Israel is 'stiff-necked' carries immense weight. But was this a final judgment, or an observation leading to something else?
When God says, 'I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people,' it’s a stark, accurate assessment. However, it’s crucial to see this not as God giving up on them, but as the backdrop against which His grace and Moses' intercession will shine.
The Reality of Sin
God's statement is a clear-eyed recognition of the people's deep-seated sin and rebellion, especially in their turning to the golden calf. He sees their true nature, their inclination towards idolatry and disobedience, even after experiencing His power.
The Door for Mercy
This observation, however, doesn't shut the door on mercy. Instead, it sets the stage for Moses' powerful intercession. God reveals this truth to Moses, not to condemn them outright, but to prompt a response. The depth of their sin highlights the even greater depth of God's willingness to be entreated and to show mercy through the prayers of His servant.
