The people didn't just make a golden calf; they declared "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!" They weren't just creating a new deity, but attributing God's past salvific acts to this idol, a blatant attempt to usurp the very power that had freed them. This highlights how idolatry often involves corrupting and reassigning God's own glorious history to something lesser.
They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them. They have made for themselves a golden calf and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Just a few weeks after receiving the Law and promising obedience on Mount Sinai, the Israelites grew impatient with Moses' prolonged absence. They pressured Aaron into fashioning a golden calf, an idol they declared was their god that had rescued them from Egypt, thus directly defying God’s commands and their own recent covenant. This immediate and profound betrayal occurs right after God has revealed Himself and established His covenant with them.
