The verse emphasizes that the anointing oil, a potent symbol of God's presence and consecration, was to touch both the dwelling place of God (the tent) and the very covenant of His Word (the ark). This highlights that God's presence isn't confined to one sacred space but extends to the place where His promises are kept and His laws are housed, calling them both into a state of holiness.
With it you shall anoint the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony, and the table and all its utensils, and the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense, and the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils and the basin and its stand. You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy. Whatever touches them will become holy.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage is part of a detailed set of instructions from God to Moses for constructing and consecrating the Tabernacle and its associated items. Following the recipe for the sacred anointing oil, Moses is now commanded to use it first to set apart the entire Tent of Meeting and specifically the Ark of the Covenant, which housed the stone tablets of the Law, marking them as uniquely holy for God's presence. This consecration ritual precedes the anointing of the priests themselves, emphasizing that God's dwelling place and the sacred objects within it must be sanctified before His chosen servants can minister there.
Imagine a scent so rich and pure it marked the very presence of God. This wasn't just perfume; it was a sacred act.
The anointing oil, a special blend of precious spices and olive oil, was the outward sign of consecration. When poured on the Tabernacle and its furnishings, it declared them set apart, holy, and dedicated solely to God's service.
This wasn't just a box; it held the very words of God and represented His unbreakable promises. Why was it so crucial to anoint it?
The 'ark of the testimony' was the most sacred item in the Tabernacle, housing the stone tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments – the core of God's covenant with Israel. Anointing it declared its supreme holiness and its central role in representing God's faithfulness.
