Exodus 30:1-10

What does Exodus 30:1-10 mean?

The acacia wood, known for its durability, signifies that this sacred altar, meant for the sweet-smelling incense symbolizing prayers, was built to last, just as our devotion and connection with God should endure through generations. This seemingly simple material choice points to the lasting nature of our worship and our prayers ascending to the Lord.

“You shall make an altar on which to burn incense; you shall make it of acacia wood. A cubit shall be its length, and a cubit its breadth. It shall be square, and two cubits shall be its height. Its horns shall be of one piece with it. You shall overlay it with pure gold, its top and around its sides and its horns. And you shall make a molding of gold around it. And you shall make two golden rings for it. Under its molding on two opposite sides of it you shall make them, and they shall be holders for poles with which to carry it. You shall make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. And you shall put it in front of the veil that is above the ark of the testimony, in front of the mercy seat that is above the testimony, where I will meet with you. And Aaron shall burn fragrant incense on it. Every morning when he dresses the lamps he shall burn it, and when Aaron sets up the lamps at twilight, he shall burn it, a regular incense offering before the LORD throughout your generations. You shall not offer unauthorized incense on it, or a burnt offering, or a grain offering, and you shall not pour a drink offering on it. Aaron shall make atonement on its horns once a year. With the blood of the sin offering of atonement he shall make atonement for it once in the year throughout your generations. It is most holy to the LORD.”

What Exodus 30:1-10 means

After detailing the construction of the Tabernacle and its furnishings, God now instructs Moses on the creation of the Altar of Incense, made of acacia wood. This altar was to be placed before the veil separating the Holy Place from the Most Holy, symbolizing its intimate connection to God's presence and serving as the place for daily incense offerings. The text then outlines the specific daily duties of Aaron concerning this altar, emphasizing the perpetual nature of this service and strictly forbidding any unauthorized incense.

Sacred Wood for a Sacred Purpose

Why specify the type of wood for this altar? What's so special about acacia wood that it's used for so many sacred furnishings?

God's instructions for the Tabernacle furniture were incredibly detailed, and the choice of materials was no exception. The altar of incense was to be made of acacia wood, the same durable and incorruptible wood used for the Ark of the Covenant and the Table of Showbread.

Durability and Beauty: Acacia wood was known for its strength and resistance to decay, ensuring the sacred furniture would last. This speaks to the enduring nature of God's covenant and His presence.
Symbolic Resonance: The fact that this wood was used for multiple key pieces of furniture suggests a common thread of divine instruction and sacred purpose woven throughout the Tabernacle. It’s a material chosen for its ability to be both beautiful and long-lasting in God's service.

Incense: The Prayers of God's People

This altar wasn't for animal sacrifices, but for burning a fragrant offering. What did this unique 'sweet smoke' represent?

The altar of incense held a special place in the Tabernacle, not for atonement through sacrifice, but for the presentation of a different kind of offering: incense.

A Daily Offering: The instructions clearly state that Aaron was to burn 'sweet incense' on this altar every morning and evening. This wasn't a one-time event but a perpetual ordinance, signifying constant devotion.
