This physical veil in the Tabernacle points to a much greater reality, a separation and a reconciliation that impacts us profoundly.
The veil in the Tabernacle was a powerful symbol with a profound fulfillment in Jesus Christ.
A Symbol of Separation
The veil represented the separation between sinful humanity and a holy God. Because of our sin, we could not approach God directly. The Law, represented by the Ark within the Most Holy Place, highlighted our inability to perfectly keep God's commands, thus maintaining the separation.
The Ultimate Sacrifice
When Jesus died on the cross, the veil of the Temple, according to the Gospels, was torn in two from top to bottom. This was not a natural event but a divine declaration.
- Access Granted: This tearing signified that the barrier between God and humanity had been removed through Christ’s sacrifice. His death satisfied the demands of God's justice and atoned for our sins.
- Direct Access: Believers now have direct access to God through Jesus, the High Priest who entered the Most Holy Place (heaven itself) on our behalf. We no longer need a physical veil or a yearly ritual to approach God.
The veil's purpose was temporary, pointing to the permanent reality of reconciliation through Christ.
