Exodus 26:31-35

What does Exodus 26:31-35 mean?

The veil isn't just decorative; it's intricately woven with cherubim, hinting at God's presence and the heavenly realm that it separates. This detail underscores that the barrier wasn't simply fabric, but a divine statement about access to God, with the cherubim symbolizing the holy beings who guard His presence.

“And you shall make a veil of blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen. It shall be made with cherubim skillfully worked into it. And you shall hang it on four pillars of acacia overlaid with gold, with hooks of gold, on four bases of silver. And you shall hang the veil from the clasps, and bring the ark of the testimony in there within the veil. And the veil shall separate for you the Holy Place from the Most Holy. You shall put the mercy seat on the ark of the testimony in the Most Holy Place. And you shall set the table outside the veil, and the lampstand on the south side of the tabernacle opposite the table, and you shall put the table on the north side.

What Exodus 26:31-35 means

This verse details the creation of a magnificent, intricately woven veil, made of costly materials and featuring cherubim, which will hang in the tabernacle. This veil serves a crucial purpose: to separate the "Holy Place" from the "Most Holy Place" (or Holy of Holies), a sacred space where the Ark of the Covenant would reside. This separation highlights the immense holiness of God and the restricted access to His presence, a theme further explored in later chapters.

Woven Warnings and Heavenly Hues

Look closely at the colors and the intricate design of this veil. What do these rich materials and skilled artistry suggest about God and His dwelling place?

This veil wasn't just a piece of fabric; it was a breathtaking work of art, made with the most expensive materials: blue, purple, and scarlet yarns, and fine twined linen. These colors weren't chosen randomly. The deep blue often symbolized the heavens or God's divine presence. Purple was associated with royalty and wealth, while scarlet could represent life or sacrifice. The fine twined linen speaks of purity and perfection.

More than just beautiful, the veil was intricately crafted with cherubim skillfully worked into it. These angelic beings are often depicted as guardians of God's holiness. Their presence here signifies that this was no ordinary space – it was a boundary to the Most Holy Place, where God's presence dwelled in a unique way. This wasn't a casual entrance; it was a carefully guarded realm, announcing the holiness and majesty of God.

The Veil: A Symbol of Separation and Access

This thick, ornate veil physically blocked access to the innermost part of the Tabernacle. What did this barrier represent, and how does it connect to our access to God today?

The veil served a crucial purpose: it divided the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place (or Holy of Holies). This was the space where the Ark of the Covenant resided, symbolizing God's direct presence. Only the High Priest could enter, and only once a year, on the Day of Atonement, after meticulous purification and sacrifice.

This separation was a powerful symbol of the great divide between God's absolute holiness and sinful humanity. The veil declared that direct, unhindered access to God was not possible in the old covenant system. It pointed forward, hinting that a greater sacrifice would be needed to truly tear down this barrier.
