Exodus 23:20-23

What does Exodus 23:20-23 mean?

The "place I have prepared" isn't just the land of Canaan; it points beyond, to a heavenly dwelling, echoing Jesus' promise of preparing a place for His followers in John 14. This angel isn't merely a guide but God's own presence, carrying His name and authority.

“Behold, I send an angel before you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared. Pay careful attention to him and obey his voice; do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression, for my name is in him. “But if you carefully obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. “When my angel goes before you and brings you to the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Canaanites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, and I blot them out,

What Exodus 23:20-23 means

This promise comes at the end of the "Book of the Covenant," which details laws for Israel's life in community and worship. Following these instructions, God offers blessings and security in the journey ahead, culminating in entering the promised land He has prepared. It's a profound assurance that God will actively lead and protect His people, even as they face the challenges of their pilgrimage.

The Angel of God's Presence

Who is this Angel God sends ahead of Israel? The text gives clues that point to someone far greater than a created being.

The verse opens with "Behold, I send an Angel before you." This isn't just any angel; the context and further descriptions strongly suggest it's a divine messenger, often called the "Angel of the Lord" or "Angel of God's Presence" throughout Scripture.

More Than a Messenger

Divine Authority: The text states, "Beware of him and obey his voice; do not provoke him, for he will not pardon your transgression, for My Name is in him" (Exodus 23:21). This authority to forgive or not forgive transgressions, coupled with God's very "name" being within him, points to a divine identity. No created angel would carry such weight.
Theological Significance: Many scholars identify this Angel as a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. This interpretation is supported by later New Testament writings, like 1 Corinthians 10:9, which speaks of Israel tempting "Christ" in the wilderness.
God's Personal Involvement: This promise signifies God's direct and personal involvement in guiding and protecting His people, assuring them of His presence even as they journey toward the Promised Land.

A Journey to God's Prepared Place

The destination isn't just a piece of land; it's a place symbolizing God's ultimate provision and presence.
