This promise isn't just about a supernatural escort; it's a profound statement that God Himself, in a personal, pre-incarnate form, would go with them, not just ahead of them. The phrase "My name is in him" signifies that this Angel embodies God's very authority and presence, meaning obedience to this Angel is obedience to God Himself.
“Behold, I send an angel before you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared. Pay careful attention to him and obey his voice; do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression, for my name is in him. “But if you carefully obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This promise comes at the end of the "Book of the Covenant," which lays out laws and principles for Israel's life as God's people. It's a concluding section that shifts from commands to God's powerful assurances, detailing the rewards of obedience. The promise of a divine angel as a guide and protector is crucial, setting the stage for Israel's journey from Egypt towards the land God has prepared for them.
God doesn't just tell Israel to go; He promises to send Someone ahead of them. But who is this 'angel' He speaks of?
The Hebrew word for 'angel' (malach) simply means 'messenger.' While sometimes it refers to created angelic beings, in this context, the description points to something much grander. Notice how God says, 'My name is in him' (Exodus 23:21) and speaks of His 'name being in' this angel. This isn't just a delegated authority; it signifies His very presence and essence are vested in this messenger. Many scholars and the biblical text itself point to this Angel as a divine manifestation – the 'Angel of the Covenant' or even God Himself in a pre-incarnate form. This Messenger isn't merely carrying a message; He is the message, God's personal presence with His people.
Israel is on a journey to a promised land. What does it mean for God to 'prepare' a place and send an Angel to guide them?
This Angel isn't just a tour guide to keep Israel from getting lost. The promise is to 'guard you on the way' and 'bring you to the place that I have prepared.' This implies protection from dangers, provision for their needs, and the ultimate goal of bringing them to a place already purposed and made ready by God. It speaks to God's sovereignty and foresight. He doesn't just open a door; He prepares the room and ensures you arrive safely. This preparedness extends beyond the physical land of Canaan, hinting at a greater, eternal dwelling God is preparing for His people.
