Why would an all-powerful God appear in a 'thick cloud' instead of with dazzling light?
God's appearance on Mount Sinai wasn't just a show of power, but a deliberate choice to make Himself heard. The 'thick cloud' (Hebrew: 'denseness of a cloud') served as a veil, a crucial element for the people to be able to hear God's words to Moses without being overwhelmed.
Imagine trying to listen to someone speak during a fireworks display – the light and noise would drown them out. Similarly, God's direct, unfiltered glory would have been too much for sinful humans to bear and still comprehend His message. He intentionally limited the visual display so that the auditory experience, God speaking directly to Moses in their hearing, would be the primary focus. This allowed the people to connect God's powerful presence with Moses' message, ensuring they could 'hear when I speak with you.'
