God's powerful gaze, described as a "look" through the pillar, actively disorients and terrifies the Egyptian forces. This wasn't just a passive observation, but a divine action, possibly involving supernatural storms and terrifying flashes of light, to throw them into utter chaos right before their destruction.
And in the morning watch the LORD in the pillar of fire and of cloud looked down on the Egyptian forces and threw the Egyptian forces into a panic, clogging their chariot wheels so that they drove heavily. And the Egyptians said, “Let us flee from before Israel, for the LORD fights for them against the Egyptians.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
As the Israelites miraculously cross the Red Sea on dry ground, the Egyptian army foolishly pursues them into the parted waters. The pillar of cloud and fire, which had protected Israel, now turns to disorient and terrify the Egyptians. This verse marks the moment God actively intervenes by night to sow panic and confusion within the Egyptian ranks, setting the stage for their imminent destruction.
What happens when God 'looks' at His enemies? It's not a passive glance, but an active, terrifying display of power.
The verse describes the Lord looking 'through the pillar of fire and of the cloud.' This isn't just God observing; it's His divine presence actively confronting the Egyptian army. The pillar, which had been a protective screen for Israel, now becomes a terrifying spectacle for the Egyptians. This 'gaze' wasn't a neutral observation but an act that brought about their panic and confusion. It’s a powerful reminder that when God turns His attention towards His enemies, it is with intent and consequence.
Why the 'morning watch'? This specific moment highlights God's perfect timing in bringing terror and judgment.
The 'morning watch' refers to the period just before dawn, often considered a vulnerable time. For the Egyptians, who were pursuing Israel into the sea, this was the moment of their greatest peril. God's action here isn't random; it's precisely timed. While the Israelites had a night of miraculous passage, the Egyptians are struck at the cusp of a new day, a day that would bring their destruction rather than deliverance. This timing emphasizes that God orchestrates events for His purposes, bringing His judgment at the most effective moment.
The very sign of God's presence for Israel becomes the source of terror for their enemies. How can this be?
The pillar of cloud and fire was God's tangible presence, guiding and protecting Israel. For the Egyptians, however, this same pillar was a harbinger of doom. It's suggested the fiery aspect might have intensified, or the cloud-side, which previously obscured their view of Israel, now revealed their terrifying situation. It brought 'trouble' – a deep panic and confusion. This dual nature of God's presence is profound: a source of light and guidance for His people, but overwhelming judgment for those who oppose Him.
