The command to "put away" leaven on the first day is not just about getting rid of it, but actively "making it cease" from your houses, highlighting a proactive stance against corruption. This ritual purification is tied directly to a severe consequence: being "cut off from Israel," underscoring that symbolic impurity carried significant weight for the covenant community.
Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven out of your houses, for if anyone eats what is leavened, from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel. On the first day you shall hold a holy assembly, and on the seventh day a holy assembly. No work shall be done on those days. But what everyone needs to eat, that alone may be prepared by you.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God is giving Moses and Aaron the final instructions for the very first Passover observance, which is set to happen just before the miraculous exodus from Egypt. This passage details the commands for the week-long Feast of Unleavened Bread that will follow the Passover meal itself, emphasizing the complete removal of leaven from their homes and the severe consequence for disobedience. The instructions here set the pattern for how this crucial festival will be observed for generations to come, linking ritual purity to national identity and divine favor.
Why would eating a bit of bread lead to being 'cut off' from God's people? The answer lies in what leaven represented.
In the ancient Israelite context, leaven (or yeast) was understood as a product of decay and corruption. When added to dough, it would cause it to puff up and ferment, spreading its influence throughout the entire mixture.
This made leaven a potent symbol for sin and corruption in the spiritual life. It represented anything that would puff up the ego, spread falsehood, or lead to moral decay.
The command to remove all leaven from their homes for seven days wasn't just about food; it was a powerful, tangible reminder that sin, in all its forms, had to be completely purged from their lives and communities during this sacred time.
The consequence for eating leavened bread was severe: being 'cut off from Israel.' What did that really mean?
Being 'cut off from Israel' was a profound and serious penalty. It signified a complete separation from the covenant community, God's chosen people.
This could manifest in several ways:

The severity underscores the immense importance God placed on obedience and purity, especially during this foundational event commemorating their liberation from bondage.
The Passover meal itself was eaten in haste, yet this festival demanded meticulous removal of leaven. How do these seemingly opposite ideas connect?
The Feast of Unleavened Bread, starting with this command, served a dual purpose:
Commemoration of Haste: The Israelites fled Egypt so quickly that their dough didn't have time to rise. Eating unleavened bread was a direct, physical reminder of this sudden and urgent departure from slavery.
Symbol of Purity: Simultaneously, the absence of leaven symbolized the need for absolute purity as they entered into a new covenant relationship with God. They were leaving behind the corrupting influences of Egypt and needed to be set apart for Him.
This highlights a crucial spiritual principle: sometimes, God calls us to act with urgency and immediacy, but this action must be accompanied by a deep commitment to inner purity and a purging of sin. True freedom from bondage, whether physical or spiritual, requires both decisive action and a cleansed heart.

Commemoration of the Exodus
Institution of the Feast of Unleavened Bread
God institutes the seven-day Feast of Unleavened Bread to commemorate the hasty departure from Egypt, where there was no time for dough to rise. This feast, beginning the day after Passover, becomes a perpetual ordinance.
This passage directly connects leaven to sin and corruption, echoing the symbolic meaning of removing leaven during Passover as described in Exodus. It shows how the ancient command to purge leaven carries forward into the New Testament as a metaphor for spiritual purity.
Galatians 5:9Paul uses the proverb 'a little leaven leavens the whole lump' to warn against the spread of false teaching and sin within the community. This echoes the strictness of Exodus 12, where even a small amount of leaven was forbidden due to its corrupting influence.
Luke 12:1Jesus warns his followers to 'Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.' This shows the enduring symbolic significance of leaven representing something corrupt and hidden that needs to be purged, just as the Israelites were commanded to remove it from their homes.
Leviticus 23:6This passage reiterates the command to eat unleavened bread during the Feast of Unleavened Bread, highlighting the continuous nature of this observance. It reinforces the idea that removing leaven was not a one-time act but a central part of an ongoing covenantal relationship with God.
Deuteronomy 16:3This verse also describes the feast of unleavened bread, linking it directly to the affliction of the Israelites in Egypt. It emphasizes the historical memory and the need to remember the haste of their departure, which necessitated unleavened bread, as commanded in Exodus 12.
gillExodus 12:15: "Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel."

And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next unto his house take it, according to the number of the souls: every man, according to his eating, shall make your count for the lamb.
