Exodus 1:7-12

What does Exodus 1:7-12 mean?

The verse uses multiple, almost redundant, words to describe their growth: "fruitful," "increased abundantly," "multiplied," and "grew exceedingly strong." This isn't just poetic flourish; it emphasizes that their expansion wasn't merely a numerical increase, but a robust, powerful proliferation, defying all natural expectations to become a formidable presence in the land.

But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them. Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens. They built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Raamses. But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel.

What Exodus 1:7-12 means

The book of Exodus begins by reminding us of the covenant God made with Abraham to make his descendants a great nation. After Joseph and his generation had passed, the Israelites, who had been living peacefully in Goshen, experienced an astonishing and rapid multiplication, filling the land with their numbers and growing incredibly strong. This immense growth, while seemingly natural in the fertile land of Egypt, was a direct fulfillment of God's ancient promise, setting the stage for the dramatic events to come.

God's Promise Fuels Multiplication

How did a family of about 70 people grow into a nation of over 600,000 fighting men in just a few centuries?

Exodus 1:7 paints a picture of incredible growth for the Israelites in Egypt. The text uses a cascade of words: 'fruitful,' 'increased greatly,' 'multiplied,' and 'exceedingly strong.' This wasn't just natural population growth; it was a miraculous fulfillment of God's ancient promise to Abraham that his descendants would become a great nation (Genesis 22:17). For 430 years, God was patiently working, transforming a single family into a multitude, demonstrating that His promises, though sometimes slow to unfold, are always sure. This astonishing multiplication began even in the first 215 years, where 70 people became many, and then exploded in the following 215 years.

Miracle Beyond Natural Explanation

Skeptics have questioned how such rapid growth was possible. What does the text reveal about the nature of this increase?

The sheer scale of the Israelites' multiplication described in Exodus 1:7 is staggering. Commentators note that the repeated use of strong verbs and adverbs emphasizes that this was no ordinary demographic event. While factors like Egypt's fertile land, favorable conditions, and potentially longer lifespans might have contributed, the primary driver was divine intervention. The text doesn't just state they grew; it highlights a 'wonderful increase' and describes them as 'exceeding mighty.' This miraculous growth surpasses normal human propagation, serving as a powerful testament to God's ability to fulfill His word in ways that defy human reasoning and underscore His active involvement in history.
