Esther 3:7-9

What does Esther 3:7-9 mean?

What's easily missed is that Haman and his diviners repeatedly cast lots for months and days over the entire year, suggesting a desperate, drawn-out search for the "perfect" time, not an immediate decision. This drawn-out process, spanning from the first month to the last, actually allowed God's providence to intervene, giving Mordecai and Esther the time they needed to change the course of events.

In the first month, which is the month of Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, they cast Pur (that is, they cast lots) before Haman day after day; and they cast it month after month till the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar. Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus, “There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom. Their laws are different from those of every other people, and they do not keep the king’s laws, so that it is not to the king’s profit to tolerate them. If it please the king, let it be decreed that they be destroyed, and I will pay 10,000 talents of silver into the hands of those who have charge of the king’s business, that they may put it into the king’s treasuries.”

What Esther 3:7-9 means

Haman, determined to destroy Mordecai and all the Jewish people, begins a lengthy process of casting lots to find the most auspicious day for his devastating plan. This divination, lasting from the first month, Nisan, throughout the entire year until the twelfth month, Adar, highlights his malicious intent and reliance on pagan practices to achieve his goal. Ultimately, this extended timeline, orchestrated by divine providence, creates a crucial window of opportunity for Esther to intervene.

Deception in the Name of Providence

Haman sought divine favor through lots, but his 'lucky day' was actually orchestrated by God for His people's salvation. How can we discern true divine guidance from manipulative schemes?

Haman's Pursuit of a Favorable Day

Haman, driven by his intense hatred for Mordecai and the Jewish people, didn't leave their destruction to chance. Instead, he consulted ancient methods of divination, casting lots ('Pur') repeatedly.

Day by Day, Month by Month: This wasn't a quick decision. The text emphasizes that the process took an entire year, starting in the first month (Nisan) and continuing until the twelfth month (Adar).
Seeking a 'Lucky' Day: The goal was to find the most auspicious time, a day believed to guarantee success and favor for his wicked plan. This reflects a common ancient practice, where rulers and individuals alike sought divine sanction through various forms of divination.

The Great Deceiver's Blindness

Haman believed he was manipulating fate, using 'Pur' to find a day aligned with his destructive desires. However, the narrative reveals a profound irony: his determined efforts to find the perfect day for destruction were unknowingly setting the stage for God's perfect timing for deliverance.

This shows that while people may seek to use seemingly spiritual or providential means to further their evil schemes, God remains sovereign. He can even use the wicked's own chosen methods and timings to bring about His righteous purposes.
