This isn't just a beauty regimen; it's a year-long, carefully prescribed process designed to purify and prepare women for the king, addressing not just outward appearance but also underlying physical conditions and scents common in that hot climate. Now when the turn came for each young woman to go in to King Ahasuerus, after being twelve months under the regulations for the women, since this was the regular period of their beautifying, six months with oil of myrrh and six months with spices and ointments for women—
English Standard Version (ESV)
The king, having recovered from his anger and moved by Esther's absence, ordered a vast search for beautiful young virgins throughout his empire to replace Vashti. This verse details the rigorous, year-long beauty regimen each chosen woman underwent in the palace's harem, a process involving extensive use of myrrh and fragrant oils to prepare them for their presentation to Ahasuerus. This elaborate purification was standard practice, serving not only to enhance their appearance but also to ensure the king could be certain of any resulting heirs' paternity.
Imagine preparing for a year for a single meeting! This wasn't just a quick spa day; it was a rigorous, extended process.
Esther's introduction to King Ahasuerus wasn't immediate. The text describes a meticulous twelve-month preparation period for each young woman. This lengthy process, divided into six months of myrrh oil and six months of spices and perfumes, wasn't just about superficial beauty.
This year-long process served more than just aesthetics; it had practical implications for the king and the women involved.
While the outward appearance was crucial, the extended purification period served deeper purposes. The commentators suggest these were not solely for the woman's beauty but also for the king's assurance and the elimination of any potential issues.
