Ephesians 6:10-14

What does Ephesians 6:10-14 mean?

This isn't just a general encouragement to be strong; it's a specific call to draw strength from the Lord Himself. It highlights that our power comes not from within us, but from the divine "might of His strength" that is actively at work for us.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

What Ephesians 6:10-14 means

After detailing instructions for Christian living and relationships, Paul transitions to a final, urgent exhortation about spiritual warfare. He's preparing believers for a cosmic battle, not against human opponents, but against unseen, powerful spiritual forces of evil. This verse serves as the crucial opening to describing the armor needed for that fight.

Strength is Not Your Own

Feeling weak or overwhelmed? You're not alone. The Bible calls us to be strong, but not in the way you might think.

Paul's instruction, "be strong in the Lord," isn't about mustering up your own courage or willpower. It's a call to draw your strength from an external source: God himself.

Think of it like this: You can't power your house with your own body; you plug into the electrical grid. Similarly, as Christians, our spiritual strength comes from our connection to the Lord.

This means recognizing our limitations and actively leaning on God's power, which is far greater than our own.

The Source of Unshakeable Power

The verse doesn't just say 'God's strength,' it says something more. What's the big deal about 'the power of His might'?

Paul piles on the language here: "in the Lord, and in the power of His might." This isn't just a casual suggestion; it's an emphatic declaration of where our true power comes from.

'Power' (dynamis) often refers to inherent ability or capacity – the very power God has within Himself.
'Might' (kratos) speaks of the forceful exercise of that power, the visible demonstration of its strength.

So, Paul is telling us to be strengthened in the Lord, and to tap into the dynamic, inherent ability and forceful strength that God possesses and makes available to us.
