Ephesians 6:10-13

What does Ephesians 6:10-13 mean?

This isn't just a call to feel strong; it's an instruction to become strong through an active reliance on God's power, not our own. The phrase "in the power of his might" emphasizes that the strength we need isn't a general, passive reserve, but a dynamic, active force drawn directly from God for the specific battles we face.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Ephesians 6:10-13 means

After instructing believers on their responsibilities within their families and society, Paul shifts focus to the spiritual warfare they face. He knows these daily duties and the Christian life itself require immense strength, especially because they are up against powerful, unseen enemies. This verse serves as the crucial transition, calling them to tap into God's own power for the battles ahead.

Strength from a Divine Source

Ever feel like you're running on empty? This verse reminds us where true, sustainable strength comes from.

Paul's closing exhortation isn't about digging deeper into your own reserves. The command to 'be strong in the Lord' means leaning into God's power, not your own.

It's Not About Self-Reliance: This isn't a pep talk to 'try harder' using your own willpower. It's an invitation to rely on God's inherent strength available to you.
God's Power, Our Experience: The phrase 'in the power of his might' emphasizes that God's strength is immense and actively at work. We connect to this power through faith and dependence.

The Christian Life as a Battle

Paul isn't just offering encouragement; he's issuing a battle cry. What are we fighting against?

The call to be strong comes in the context of spiritual warfare. Paul is preparing believers for a conflict that is far more intense than any earthly struggle.

Invisible Foes: The 'strength' needed isn't for everyday life's difficulties alone, but for facing powerful, spiritual enemies – 'principalities,' 'powers,' and 'spiritual forces of evil.' These are unseen forces actively opposing God's work and His people.
The Purpose of Strength: This divine strength is essential for standing firm against these adversaries, not for conquering them in our own might, but for enduring and resisting their influence and attacks.
