Ephesians 5:3-7

What does Ephesians 5:3-7 mean?

While we might assume "covetousness" is just about wanting stuff, Paul elevates it here, linking it directly with sexual sin. This shows how intensely he viewed the greedy, insatiable desire for more – whether for possessions or illicit pleasures – as fundamentally incompatible with a holy life.

But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them;

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Ephesians 5:3-7 means

Paul is urging believers to live like the "dear children" of God they now are, contrasting their new identity with the "darkness" and sin of their former lives. He's emphasizing that they've been called to holiness, moving away from the debauchery common in the pagan world around them. This verse specifically warns against sexual sins and greed, calling for these vices to be completely absent, not even spoken of, among God's people.

Beyond Just Avoiding Bad Actions

Paul calls for more than just refraining from certain acts. He demands a complete cultural shift within the church regarding sin.

Paul isn't just saying, "Don't do these things." He's saying, "Don't even let these things be named among you." This is a radical call to internalize God's standard so deeply that these sins become unthinkable, not just un-acted upon. It’s about creating an environment where the very mention of such impurity is met with immediate rejection, not casual acceptance or even whispered discussion. This goes beyond outward behavior to shape the very heart and atmosphere of the community.

Covetousness: A Sin Like Any Other

Paul groups 'covetousness' with 'sexual immorality' and 'uncleanness.' Why does he elevate a desire for possessions to the same level as outright impurity?

This is a crucial, often overlooked point. Paul links 'covetousness' (an insatiable desire for more) directly with blatant sexual sins. This isn't just about wanting a new gadget; it's about a heart orientation that prioritizes personal gain and satisfaction above God's will and the needs of others. When we chase wealth or possessions relentlessly, it can become an idol, functioning like 'idolatry' (Colossians 3:5). This insatiable desire, whether for things, power, or status, mirrors the destructive nature of sexual sin by making us self-centered and unresponsive to God's love and commands.

The Standard for Saints

Paul says these sins must not be named 'as is proper among saints.' What does it truly mean to live as someone set apart for God?
