Ephesians 5:3-6

What does Ephesians 5:3-6 mean?

Paul intentionally groups covetousness with sexual immorality and impurity, highlighting its equally debasing nature as a sin that should be unthinkable, not just avoided, within the community of saints. This association reveals Paul's view that the insatiable desire for more, whether for possessions or pleasure, fundamentally contradicts a life dedicated to God.

But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

What Ephesians 5:3-6 means

Paul is continuing his exhortation for believers to live lives that reflect their new identity in Christ, urging them to walk in love as imitators of God. He's shifting from general instructions on how to live as God's children to specifically addressing sins that are incompatible with this calling, particularly those related to impurity and greed. This verse serves as a stern warning against such behaviors, contrasting them with the holy character expected of those set apart by God.

Beyond Just Naming: Total Rejection

Paul doesn't just tell us what not to do, but how we should actively not engage with certain sins. What does it mean to not even 'name' something?

The apostle Paul issues a strong command here: 'must not even be named among you.' This isn't about censoring conversations about sin, but about a radical detachment and a refusal to let these sins take root or be tolerated within the community.

Not Even Named: This phrase suggests a complete absence of these behaviors. It's about creating an environment where such things are so foreign and detestable that they aren't even a casual topic of discussion or, more importantly, a practice.
A Higher Standard: Paul contrasts this with the pagan world around them, where these sins were common. For believers, the standard is set by their new identity in Christ and their calling to be 'saints' – set apart for God.

Covetousness: The Hidden Sin

Paul links sexual immorality and impurity with covetousness. Why is this seemingly 'lesser' sin placed on the same level?

It’s easy to dismiss 'covetousness' as simply wanting things, but Paul, and the broader biblical narrative, sees it as a deeply corrupting force, on par with sexual sins.

More Than Wanting: Covetousness, in this context, is an insatiable desire for more – more possessions, more status, more control. It’s an inner greed that can lead to neglecting God and treating others as means to an end.
