This verse isn't just about equipping people for ministry, but for a specific kind of equipping: "perfecting" the saints. This word implies more than just training; it's about restoring, fitting together, and making complete, like setting a bone or perfectly tuning an instrument, so that believers can then effectively serve and build up the whole body.
to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul has just explained that Christ ascended and gave gifts to humanity, specifically appointing apostles, prophets, evangelists, and pastors and teachers. This verse reveals the divine purpose behind these appointments: to equip believers for service and to build up the church. The following verses will elaborate on how this equipping leads to unity and maturity, preventing believers from being tossed about by false teachings.
The Bible talks about 'equipping' believers, but what does that really mean? It's more than just a quick fix – it's a deep adjustment for service.
Paul uses the word 'perfecting' (Greek: katartismos) here, which isn't about reaching flawless perfection. Think of it like setting a dislocated bone or refitting a ship – it's about bringing something that's out of joint or incomplete back into its proper, functional state.
We often think of 'ministry' as what pastors do, but this verse broadens the scope significantly. Who is actually meant to be ministering?
The phrase 'for the work of ministry' points to a vital truth: ministry isn't solely the job of a select few.
