Paul's statement "less than the least of all the saints" isn't just a humble declaration; it's a profound theological statement. He uses a unique, intensified form of "least" to convey that his past as a persecutor made him feel so utterly unworthy that he barely registered as belonging among God's people. This extreme self-abasement highlights that the staggering "unsearchable riches of Christ" were given to him despite his past, not because of any merit he possessed.
To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things,
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul, reflecting on the immense privilege of being chosen to spread the gospel, expresses his profound unworthiness. He contrasts his past as a persecutor with his current calling to reveal the boundless, incomprehensible treasures of God's salvation found in Christ, specifically to non-Jewish people. This sets the stage for his discussion of God's eternal plan to unite all people, both Jew and Gentile, through this mystery.
Why does Paul describe himself with such an unusual and emphatic phrase? It's more than just modesty – it reveals a profound understanding of God's grace.
Paul calls himself 'less than the least of all the saints.' This isn't just a polite or humble-sounding phrase. The original Greek is unique, emphasizing an almost superlative degree of lowliness.
A Self-Assessment Rooted in Grace
What are these 'unsearchable riches' Paul was tasked with proclaiming? They are far more valuable than any earthly treasure.
The phrase 'unsearchable riches of Christ' is a powerful metaphor for the boundless and inexhaustible blessings found in Christ. These aren't material riches, but the profound spiritual wealth God offers through His Son.
