Ephesians 2:12-13

The verse paints a stark picture of spiritual destitution, but the phrase "aliens from the commonwealth of Israel" highlights that exclusion wasn't just about being outside of something, but being actively estranged from God's chosen community and its unique privileges. This emphasizes not merely a lack of knowledge, but a severed relationship from the very people God had set apart for His promises.
remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul reminds the Ephesians of their former state as Gentiles, separated from God's people and promises. This description emphasizes their exclusion from the community of Israel and its divinely established covenants, highlighting their lack of hope and true knowledge of God in the world before their inclusion through Christ.
Imagine a life completely disconnected from the hope and purpose that Christ brings. This verse paints a stark picture of that reality.
Paul begins by reminding the Ephesians of their state before knowing Christ. The phrase 'without Christ' isn't just about not knowing his name; it means being entirely outside of his saving work and promises.
Being part of God's people and inheriting His promises weren't just ethnic privileges; they were conduits of divine hope.
The verse details two key aspects of their alienation: separation from Israel and the covenants of promise.
