The Bible doesn't mince words when describing our state before Christ. It calls it 'death.' But what does that really mean for us, living and breathing humans?
Paul's statement in Ephesians 2:1, 'you were dead in your trespasses and sins,' isn't just a metaphor for being 'really bad.' It describes a fundamental lack of spiritual life.
Beyond Physical Death
This isn't about our bodies ceasing to function. It's about a separation from God, the very source of life. Think of it like a lamp unplugged from the power source – it still looks like a lamp, but it gives no light.
- Inability to Connect: Just as a dead body can't respond to its environment, we, in our natural state, are unresponsive to God's spiritual realities. We can't 'see' God's beauty, 'hear' His voice, or 'feel' His love in a way that leads to life.
- Lack of Spiritual Life: The core principle needed for relating to God—spiritual life—is absent. This life isn't something we can generate ourselves; it must come from 'outside,' from God.
