The phrase "in love" here isn't just a general sentiment; it's presented as the very context and sphere in which God's choice and predestination operate. This means our holiness and blamelessness are deeply rooted in God's own loving disposition, not something we earn apart from His affection.
even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is beginning his letter to the Ephesians by showering praise on God for the spiritual blessings He has poured out on believers. He grounds these blessings in God's eternal choice of us in Christ before creation, emphasizing that this choice was purposed to make us holy and blameless. This foundational choice and purpose are then described as being rooted in God's love, leading into the concept of predestination for adoption as sons.
Did God choose you after you believed, or was your faith part of His original plan? This verse points to a stunning reality about God's timing.
The verse reveals that God's choice of us wasn't a reaction to our actions or faith. It happened 'before the foundation of the world.' This means God's decision to set us apart, to bring us into relationship with Him, was made in eternity past, long before the universe even existed.

'In Him':
Why does God choose us? It's not just for our benefit, but to shape us into a specific kind of people, reflecting His own character.
The purpose behind God's eternal choice is clearly stated: 'that we should be holy and blameless before Him.' This wasn't an optional add-on; it was the intended outcome of His selection.
