The verse emphasizes that the sealing with the Holy Spirit happens "in Christ" immediately "on believing," not necessarily as a separate event after belief. This highlights that the Spirit's indwelling is intimately connected with the very act of trusting in Jesus, confirming your union with Him at that moment.
In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul shifts from the collective "we" (Jewish believers) to "you" (Gentile believers), emphasizing that both groups share the same experience of salvation. This experience involves hearing the truthful message of the gospel, believing in Christ, and subsequently receiving the Holy Spirit as a divine seal, confirming their identity as God's children and guaranteeing their future inheritance.
How does someone truly connect with God's message? This verse highlights the essential steps of hearing and believing.
Paul emphasizes that salvation isn't just an abstract concept; it's something received through a deliberate process.

The sealing of the Holy Spirit, described in Ephesians 1:13, is directly linked to the experience of the Ephesian believers, particularly the Gentile converts who, upon hearing the gospel and believing, received this divine attestation. This event likely echoes the account in Acts 19:1-6, where Paul ministers to disciples in Ephesus who had not yet received the Holy Spirit, reinforcing the transformative power of the gospel preached and received.
