Ecclesiastes 5:3-6

The verse links "dreams" and "a fool's voice" not just by their occurrence, but by the cause: excessive, distracting "business" or "words." This suggests that our internal chatter, whether in restless thoughts or in babbling prayers, often stems from being overwhelmed and unfocused, rather than from genuine engagement.
For a dream comes with much business, and a fool’s voice with many words. When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay. Let not your mouth lead you into sin, and do not say before the messenger that it was a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice and destroy the work of your hands?
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Preacher has just urged his audience to approach God's house with reverence, warning against the thoughtless and excessive talk of fools, especially in prayer and vows. This verse explains why too many words betray folly: just as a mind overwhelmed with daytime business leads to restless, jumbled dreams at night, so a heart full of foolishness will spill out through a torrent of meaningless words. The implication is that genuine devotion is marked by thoughtful silence and focused listening, not by a flood of empty chatter.
Ever wonder why some nights your sleep is a chaotic jumble of thoughts and tasks? The ancient author connects this to our waking lives.
The Link Between Business and Dreams
The verse begins by linking dreams to a 'multitude of business.' Think about it: when your mind is constantly racing with worries, to-do lists, or intense projects during the day, it's no surprise that these things spill over into your dreams at night. Your subconscious mind is processing the day's 'business,' often in fragmented and jumbled ways. This isn't just an ancient observation; it highlights how our inner state is deeply affected by our daily focus and pressures.
We're warned that a fool's speech isn't just loud; it's excessive. What does this tell us about true wisdom?
The Fool and the Flood of Speech
The second part of the verse draws a parallel: just as a busy day leads to confused dreams, a 'fool's voice' is recognized by 'many words.' This isn't about eloquent speaking; it's about speaking without thought, wisdom, or restraint. A fool tends to fill the silence with endless chatter, revealing an inner lack of discernment and understanding. It's the quantity, not the quality, that betrays their foolishness. This applies especially in serious matters, like approaching God.

The verse, especially in context, points to our approach to God. Is your worship about volume, or is it about a wise, prepared heart?
The Sacrifice of Fools
When we place this verse within its immediate context (Ecclesiastes 5:1-2), the message becomes even clearer. We are urged to be careful when we go to God's house, to be 'more ready to hear than to give the sacrifice of fools.' The 'sacrifice of fools' is linked to not considering that they do evil, and the 'many words' from a fool's voice are often characteristic of their misguided approach to worship and prayer. It suggests that simply offering many words, especially in prayer or vows, without genuine understanding, reverence, or a prepared heart, is like bringing a foolish sacrifice. True worship is about offering a thoughtful, intentional devotion, not just filling the air with noise.

When men’s minds are distracted and oppressed with too much business in the day, they dream of it in the night. A fool’s voice is known; it discovers the man to be a foolish, and rash, and inconsiderate man. By multitude of words; either, 1. In prayer. Or, 2. In vowing, i.e. by making many rash vows, of which he speaks in Ecclesiastes 5:4-6 , and then returns to the menti…

For a dream cometh - That is, as dreams are generally the effect of the business in which we have been engaged during the day; so a multitude of words evidence the feeble workings of the foolish heart.
