This verse isn't just about having a friend to hang out with; it highlights that the "good reward" isn't solely about practical help, but also the encouragement and strengthened spirit that comes from shared effort and mutual support in life's toils. It suggests that our shared journey amplifies not just our capabilities, but our very capacity to find satisfaction in what we do.
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Preacher, after observing the vanity of solitary striving for wealth, now contrasts the isolation of the miser with the benefits of companionship. He argues that working together, whether in marriage, friendship, or other forms of community, offers significant advantages and a better "reward" than going it alone. This leads into practical illustrations about how two people can better support, protect, and encourage each other in various life situations.

Beyond the Individual
When he says, 'Two are better than one,' he's not just talking about having a friend to hang out with. He's highlighting how joining forces with others amplifies our capabilities. Think about it:
What’s the real pay-off when we work with others? It’s more than just the outcome of the work itself.
The 'good reward' mentioned here goes beyond tangible results like wealth or success, though those can be part of it. It encompasses the richer benefits that come from shared experience and mutual support.
