While Solomon lists wealth and performers, the phrase "the delights of the sons of men" strongly suggests he's talking about his vast harem, not just musical instruments. This detail reveals that his pursuit of pleasure wasn't just about entertainment, but deeply rooted in sensual indulgence and the accumulation of human companionship.
I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I got singers, both men and women, and many concubines, the delight of the sons of man. So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me. And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The narrator, Solomon, continues his exploration of earthly pleasures, detailing his immense wealth and the luxurious entertainment he acquired. Following his earlier pursuit of wisdom and material possessions like houses and gardens, he now boasts of amassing treasure from kings and provinces, alongside a vast retinue of singers and other sensory delights, aiming to find fulfillment in these worldly excesses.
Solomon parades his immense riches – silver, gold, and treasures from kings and provinces. But what does 'peculiar treasure' really mean here?
The King's Private Stash
Solomon didn't just have a lot of money; he had the kind of wealth that belonged to royalty. The phrase 'peculiar treasure of kings' points to items that were unique, rare, and fit for a king – think exquisite jewels, rare artifacts, or lavish gifts received from other rulers. This wasn't just the national treasury; it was his personal collection, reflecting his unparalleled status.
Beyond Borders
The mention of 'provinces' suggests his wealth came from not only his own kingdom but also from regions he controlled or had trade relations with. This implies a vast network of tribute, taxes, and profitable ventures. It’s like a modern CEO having not just personal stock, but owning businesses and receiving dividends from across the globe.
Solomon gathered singers and 'the delights of the sons of men.' What were these 'delights,' and why did they ultimately leave him empty?
A Symphony of Sensual Joys
Beyond material wealth, Solomon indulged in sensory pleasures. He amassed male and female singers, filling his court with music. But the phrase 'delights of the sons of men' is where things get complex and debated. While some ancient translations lean towards musical instruments or even exotic foods, the most compelling interpretation, fitting Solomon’s known history and the context of his excess, is that it refers to his vast harem of wives and concubines.

The Empty Echo of Pleasure
Whether it was music, art, or romantic encounters, these pleasures were designed to satisfy human desire. However, the text hints at their ultimate futility. The Hebrew word for these 'delights' is obscure, suggesting that even the language struggles to capture their essence or their effect. Like a fleeting melody or a temporary thrill, these pursuits offered momentary satisfaction but no lasting fulfillment.

This passage details Solomon's immense wealth, including gold, precious stones, and exotic materials, mirroring the 'silver and gold and the treasure of kings' that the Preacher describes accumulating.
Song of Solomon 2:1-2While Song of Solomon is a love poem, its descriptions of beauty and delight, and the longing for intimacy, can be seen as a counterpoint to the Preacher's pursuit of 'delights of the sons of men' for mere pleasure, highlighting a deeper human need.
Proverbs 14:24This proverb states that the 'crown of the wise is their Riches,' but the Preacher's account in Ecclesiastes 2 shows that even vast riches and worldly pleasures ultimately lead to vanity, offering a cautionary perspective on the pursuit of wealth.
Luke 12:15Jesus warns against greed, stating that 'one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.' This directly echoes the Preacher's conclusion in Ecclesiastes 2 that his amassed treasures and pleasures brought no lasting satisfaction.
