The good life can be a dangerous life. When things are going well, it's easy to lose sight of who put you there.
Moses is preparing Israel to enter the Promised Land, a land flowing with milk and honey. But he knows prosperity is a huge test.
The Danger of Ease
He warns them: 'When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the Lord your God...' (Deuteronomy 8:10). The temptation in abundance is to feel self-sufficient, to forget the one who gave you that abundance. It’s easy to let your focus shift from gratitude to complacency.
The Slippery Slope of Forgetfulness
Forgetting God isn't usually a sudden decision; it's a gradual drift. When we stop actively remembering and thanking God for His blessings, we start walking in our own strength. This 'walking after other gods' doesn't always mean worshipping idols; it can mean serving success, security, or pleasure instead of the Creator.
