When life is good and things are going your way, it's easy to feel like you've got it all figured out. But Scripture warns that success can actually blind us.
Deuteronomy 8 is a powerful reminder from God to the Israelites as they are about to enter the Promised Land – a land flowing with milk and honey, a stark contrast to the barren wilderness they endured. Moses emphasizes that this abundance is not a reward for their merit, but a fulfillment of God's promises.
The Deceptive Heart
The verse warns against saying in your heart, 'My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.' This isn't just about boasting outwardly; it's about a dangerous internal shift. When we experience success, it's natural to feel a sense of accomplishment. However, the danger lies in letting that feeling lead us to forget the true Giver of all good things. The heart can easily convince itself that our strength and our efforts are the sole reasons for our blessings, thus excluding God from the picture.
