Deuteronomy 7:13

The verse emphasizes that God's love and blessing are not just general promises, but will manifest in tangible abundance—from offspring to crops to livestock. It's striking that the word used for "flocks" here can also mean "increase" or even be linked to a fertility goddess, highlighting how God redeems and reclaims even the language surrounding life and abundance for His own glory. This isn't just about getting more, but about receiving His prolific blessing that overflows into every aspect of life.
He will love you, bless you, and multiply you. He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your wine and your oil, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock, in the land that he swore to your fathers to give you.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage comes after God's commands to drive out the Canaanites and destroy their altars. Moses is reminding Israel that if they obey God's commands, He will faithfully uphold His covenant promises to them. The verses detail the abundant blessings that obedience will bring, contrasting them with the curses that disobedience would surely follow, as previously outlined.
Ever wonder if God's love is conditional? Moses lays it out plainly: God's faithfulness isn't based on our merit, but on His ancient promise.
Deuteronomy 7:13 opens with a beautiful, foundational truth: 'He will love you, bless you, and multiply you.' This isn't a maybe; it's a declaration of God's character and His commitment. Calvin rightly points out that this promise is rooted in God being 'the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy.' God's love isn't earned; it's a covenant commitment. He initiates it, and His nature is to be faithful to the promises He made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This love is the basis for all the blessings that follow. It's a profound reminder that our relationship with God starts with His initiative and is sustained by His steadfast faithfulness, not our performance.
What does 'blessed' actually look like in practical terms? Deuteronomy 7:13 paints a picture of tangible abundance, showing how God's faithfulness impacts daily life.
The 'blessings' described here are rich and comprehensive. They cover every aspect of life: personal fertility ('fruit of your womb'), agricultural prosperity ('fruit of your land, your grain and your wine and your oil'), and the increase of livestock ('the increase of your herds and the young of your flock'). This isn't just about survival; it's about thriving. The ancient commentators, like Gill, highlight that this includes not just conception but the preservation of pregnancy and the flourishing of all produce. Ellicott and Barnes note the specific word used for flocks implies 'increase' or 'ewes,' emphasizing multiplication. This abundance is given 'in the land that he swore to your fathers to give you,' grounding these blessings in the promised inheritance and God's oath. It’s a picture of God providing generously for His people, enabling them to live securely and fruitfully in the land He designated for them.
