Who were these seven nations, and why were they significant?
The list of seven nations – Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites – represents the deeply entrenched ungodliness in the land. These people were not just enemies; they were practitioners of idolatry and associated immoral practices that deeply offended God.
Centuries before, God had given these nations ample time to repent (as mentioned in Genesis 15), but their 'iniquity' had become full. Their continued sin made them a moral hazard to Israel. God's command to 'utterly destroy' them wasn't about ethnic cleansing for its own sake, but a necessary, albeit severe, act of judgment and protection. This was crucial to prevent the Israelites from being corrupted by their pervasive idolatry and sinful lifestyles, which would ultimately lead them away from God.
