Even in their deepest distress, scattered and facing the consequences of disobedience, the promise is still open: God can be found. This isn't just about finding God when things are good, but specifically when they are at their worst, highlighting His incredible faithfulness and the power of sincere seeking.
But from there you will seek the LORD your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul. When you are in tribulation, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, you will return to the LORD your God and obey his voice. For the LORD your God is a merciful God. He will not leave you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers that he swore to them.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Moses has just laid out dire warnings of scattering and exile among foreign nations if Israel turns to idolatry. In stark contrast to those pronouncements of judgment, this verse offers a promise: even from that distant, desperate state, if they turn back to God with their whole being, they will find Him. This hope is a crucial part of God's message, showing that His covenant love endures even through Israel's disobedience and resulting punishment.

Moses is speaking to the Israelites, a people who have repeatedly failed to follow God. He acknowledges that they will, at some point, face severe consequences for their disobedience – even being scattered among the nations.
A Promise Amidst the Mess
But even in their deepest distress, when they are far from home and serving other gods, God's promise stands: "you will seek the LORD your God and you will find him." This isn't a reward for good behavior, but a lifeline thrown into the chaos of sin and its consequences. God is always there, waiting to be found, even when we've gone to the farthest corners of the earth in our rebellion.
What does it truly mean to seek God 'with all your heart and with all your soul'?
This verse isn't just about a casual glance in God's direction. The emphasis on 'all your heart' and 'all your soul' speaks to a complete, undivided devotion.
