Moses’ time is ending, but the Law must live on. Who gets the responsibility, and why does it matter who receives it?
Before Moses departs, he takes a monumental step to ensure God's Word continues to shape Israel. He writes the Law and then entrusts it to specific people.
Custodians of the Covenant
- The Priests (Sons of Levi): These were the spiritual leaders, tasked with teaching and mediating God's presence. The Law was put into their hands as the ultimate guide for Israel's worship and life. They were to be the experts, the ones people would go to with questions about God's commands.
- The Elders: These were the civil leaders, the magistrates and overseers of the community. While the priests were responsible for teaching the Law, the elders were responsible for ensuring it was upheld and obeyed within the nation. They were to support the priests and prevent the people from despising God's Word.
This wasn't just about preserving a document; it was about preserving a relationship. The Law was the roadmap for life with God, and these leaders were appointed to keep that map accessible and respected.
