Deuteronomy 3:8-11

What does Deuteronomy 3:8-11 mean?

The verse names the two kings of the Amorites, but the preceding verses detail the defeat of only one king, Sihon. This phrasing subtly implies that Sihon and Og were seen as a united front or a single oppressive force against Israel, even though their defeats were narrated separately. This collective naming of the "two kings" highlights the comprehensive nature of their victory over the Amorites in that region.

So we took the land at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the Valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon (the Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, while the Amorites call it Senir), all the cities of the tableland and all Gilead and all Bashan, as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. (For only Og the king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim. Behold, his bed was a bed of iron. Is it not in Rabbah of the Ammonites? Nine cubits was its length, and four cubits its breadth, according to the common cubit.)

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Deuteronomy 3:8-11 means

Following their victory over Sihon, the Israelites immediately turned north and confronted Og, the king of Bashan. After God assured Moses he would grant them victory, they decisively defeated Og and his people, capturing all his sixty fortified cities and the surrounding region. This verse then summarizes the immense territory taken in these two campaigns, stretching from the Arnon River in the south to Mount Hermon in the north, encompassing the lands previously held by Sihon and Og.

An Expansive New Horizon

Moses describes a vast territory taken from powerful kings. What does this massive land acquisition mean for Israel's future?

The conquest of the land from the Arnon River in the south to Mount Hermon in the north marked a significant expansion for Israel.

A New Northern Border

This verse details the southern and northern boundaries of the territory captured. The Arnon River was a natural boundary, separating Moab from Amorite lands. Mount Hermon, a towering peak visible from afar, represented the northernmost limit of this conquest.

God's Faithfulness in Action

This wasn't just any land; it was part of the territory God promised to Abraham (Genesis 15:18). By taking this land from two Amorite kings, Sihon and Og, God was actively fulfilling His covenant promises to Israel, demonstrating His power and faithfulness to His people.

Conquering by Divine Authority

The text mentions taking the land 'out of the hand' of the kings. What does this phrasing reveal about the nature of their victory?

The phrase 'out of the hand' signifies more than just military defeat; it points to God's direct intervention and sovereign authority.

God's Hand in the Victory

Israel didn't conquer this land through sheer military might alone. The commentaries highlight that God delivered these kings and their lands into Israel's hand. This means the victory was ultimately orchestrated and empowered by God.
