Deuteronomy 28:64-67

What does Deuteronomy 28:64-67 mean?

The profound sting in this curse isn't just the scattering, but that in their exile, they'll end up serving gods of "wood and stone" that neither they nor their fathers ever knew. This implies a degradation beyond mere physical displacement; it's a spiritual and cultural abandonment, a descent into alien, forgotten forms of worship that are a stark betrayal of their heritage.

“And the LORD will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other, and there you shall serve other gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your fathers have known. And among these nations you shall find no respite, and there shall be no resting place for the sole of your foot, but the LORD will give you there a trembling heart and failing eyes and a languishing soul. Your life shall hang in doubt before you. Night and day you shall be in dread and have no assurance of your life. In the morning you shall say, ‘If only it were evening!’ and at evening you shall say, ‘If only it were morning!’ because of the dread that your heart shall feel, and the sights that your eyes shall see.

What Deuteronomy 28:64-67 means

This verse is the culmination of a long list of curses detailed in Deuteronomy 28, which Moses proclaimed would come upon Israel if they disobeyed God. These blessings and curses were presented as conditional consequences for their covenant relationship with God, with blessings for obedience and severe consequences for disobedience. The scattering described here represents a final, devastating consequence that extends beyond mere conquest or exile, leading to a loss of identity and forced servitude among foreign peoples.

The Far-Reaching Consequences of Disobedience

Imagine being uprooted from everything you know, your home, your land, your very identity. This verse paints a stark picture of God's judgment, extending beyond immediate suffering.

Deuteronomy 28 lays out a comprehensive list of blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. Verse 64 is the chilling culmination of these curses, detailing a future where God's people are scattered.

A Global Exile

'Scattered among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other': This isn't just a local punishment; it's a global diaspora. God orchestrates a scattering so complete that His people will be found everywhere, yet nowhere truly at home.
'There you shall serve other gods': The scattering isn't merely physical displacement. It’s coupled with spiritual and cultural assimilation into foreign ways. In their exile, they are forced into proximity with, and often into service of, other deities. This is the ultimate reversal of their covenant relationship with the LORD, who alone was to be their God.
'wood and stone, which neither you nor your fathers have known': This highlights the foreignness of the idols they will be forced to encounter and perhaps even serve. It underscores the depth of their apostasy and the alien nature of the spiritual path they have chosen by rejecting God's commands.
