Deuteronomy 27:1-8

What does Deuteronomy 27:1-8 mean?

This isn't just Moses speaking, but Moses and the elders together delivering this command. This signifies that the entire leadership is united, emphasizing that obedience to God's Word is a corporate responsibility for Israel, not just an individual one. It highlights that the law is meant to be inscribed and remembered in the very land they are about to enter.

Now Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, “Keep the whole commandment that I command you today. And on the day you cross over the Jordan to the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall set up large stones and plaster them with plaster. And you shall write on them all the words of this law, when you cross over to enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you. And when you have crossed over the Jordan, you shall set up these stones, concerning which I command you today, on Mount Ebal, and you shall plaster them with plaster. And there you shall build an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. You shall wield no iron tool on them; you shall build an altar to the LORD your God of uncut stones. And you shall offer burnt offerings on it to the LORD your God, and you shall sacrifice peace offerings and shall eat there, and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God. And you shall write on the stones all the words of this law very plainly.”

What Deuteronomy 27:1-8 means

As Israel stands on the brink of entering the Promised Land, Moses and the elders issue a solemn charge to obey God's commands. This chapter begins a pivotal section where Moses outlines the blessings for obedience and the curses for disobedience, starting with the command to erect stones and write God's law upon them as a permanent reminder once they cross the Jordan. Following this, they are to build an altar and offer sacrifices, solidifying their covenant commitment before taking possession of the land.

A United Front for God's Word

Moses isn't alone in this crucial moment. He brings the elders alongside him to deliver a powerful message. What does this partnership signify?

A Shared Responsibility

Moses, the primary leader and lawgiver, doesn't deliver this final charge solo. He's joined by the elders of Israel. This isn't just for show; it signifies a shared commitment and responsibility.

Unity in Leadership: By including the elders, Moses demonstrates that upholding God's law isn't solely the leader's job. It's a collective duty for the entire community, represented by its respected leaders.
Reinforcing the Message: Having elders echo Moses' commands lends them extra weight. It shows the people that this isn't just Moses' personal agenda, but the unified voice of Israel's leadership, all speaking for the Lord.

The Law as the Land's Foundation

The command to 'keep all the commandments' isn't just about personal obedience. It's about establishing God's law as the very framework of their new nation.

Making the Law Public and Permanent

This command kicks off a significant act: inscribing the Law on stones and setting up an altar. This wasn't a private ceremony; it was a public declaration that God's Word would be the bedrock of their life in Canaan.
