It's easy to see God as the one who only hardens hearts, but this verse shows something more nuanced: Sihon chose not to let Israel pass, and God then used that choice to bring about His purpose. The text reveals that Sihon's "spirit" was hardened and his "heart" made obstinate so that God could deliver him into Israel's hand—meaning God worked with Sihon's own stubbornness for His ultimate plan.
But Sihon the king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might give him into your hand, as he is this day. And the LORD said to me, ‘Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to take possession, that you may occupy his land.’
English Standard Version (ESV)
After being denied passage through the lands of Edom and Moab, Israel sent peaceful messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, requesting permission to travel through his territory on the king's highway. Sihon not only refused but gathered his people to fight Israel, leading to God delivering him into Israel's hands for conquest and possession of his land.
Ever wondered how God's control and our free will work together? This verse dives headfirst into that tough question.
A Divine Purpose
Deuteronomy 2:30 tells us that God 'hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate.' This isn't just a description of Sihon's actions; it's presented as God's active involvement.
Why God Acts This Way
Israel didn't just barge in; they asked politely. So why did Sihon refuse, and what does that tell us?
Peace Denied, War Ensues
Before Sihon’s kingdom was taken, Israel sent messengers with a clear offer of peaceful passage. They promised to stick to the main roads and even pay for any food or water they needed (Deuteronomy 2:27-29).
