Deuteronomy 18:9-12

What does Deuteronomy 18:9-12 mean?

The verse warns against "learning" the abominable practices of other nations, highlighting that these harmful ways are not innate but adopted through imitation. This emphasizes that staying true to God requires conscious effort to resist influence and actively choose His ways, even when surrounded by corrupting examples.

“When you come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD. And because of these abominations the LORD your God is driving them out before you.

What Deuteronomy 18:9-12 means

As Israel stands on the brink of entering the Promised Land, God issues a stern warning against adopting the corrupt practices of the nations they are about to displace. These nations engaged in detestable acts like child sacrifice and various forms of divination, all of which were abhorrent to God. The passage sets the stage for God's provision of true spiritual guidance through prophets, contrasting them sharply with these pagan practitioners.

The Danger of 'Learning'

Imagine moving into a new neighborhood. You want to be friendly, but what if the neighbors have some really unhealthy habits? God warns His people about 'learning' from the nations around them.

This verse speaks about the Israelites entering the Promised Land. It's a place God is giving them, but it's already occupied by nations with practices God calls 'abominable.' The key word here is 'learn.' It doesn't just mean observing; it implies adopting, imitating, and internalizing these practices. God knew how easily people, especially in a new environment, can be influenced by the culture around them. He's warning against picking up their ways, even if it seems normal or appealing to them. This isn't just about avoiding outright sin, but about guarding against the subtle erosion of their distinctiveness as God's people. It's a call to intentional spiritual and cultural distinctiveness.

What 'Abominations' Looked Like

The Bible doesn't usually shy away from the gritty details of sin. What were these 'abominable practices' that God was so concerned about?

The 'abominations' mentioned here refer to the deeply corrupt religious and social practices of the Canaanite nations. These included various forms of idolatry, child sacrifice (passing children through fire to deities like Moloch), sorcery, divination, astrology, consulting spirits, and other superstitious rites. These weren't just minor deviations; they were practices that fundamentally distorted the truth about God and humanity, often involving cruelty and a disregard for life and morality. God viewed these practices as utterly detestable ('abominations') because they stood in direct opposition to His pure and holy nature and His covenant relationship with Israel. He wanted His people to be distinct, reflecting His character, not the corrupt practices of those around them.
