Deuteronomy 18:15-19

What does Deuteronomy 18:15-19 mean?

The verse emphasizes that this promised prophet will be "from among you, from your brothers." This detail isn't just about his nationality; it highlights that God's chosen messenger will share their human experience, making him relatable and accessible, not distant or alien. This intimacy is key to why they are told to "listen" – God’s message of salvation will come through one who truly understands them.

“The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen— just as you desired of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’ And the LORD said to me, ‘They are right in what they have spoken. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.

What Deuteronomy 18:15-19 means

In this passage, Moses is preparing the Israelites for his impending death and departure, assuring them that God will continue to guide them. After instructing them on how to discern true prophets from false ones and forbidding them from consulting mediums and sorcerers, he promises that God will raise up a prophet like himself from among their own people, to whom they must listen. This promise serves as both a comfort for their future and a foundation for their faith, pointing towards a future divine messenger who will speak God's words for them.

A Prophet Like Moses

Moses was a monumental figure in Israel's history – a prophet, lawgiver, mediator, and deliverer. Who could possibly be 'like him'?

This verse promises a prophet who would be similar to Moses in significant ways, yet ultimately surpass him. While Moses was a great mediator and deliverer, the ultimate fulfillment of this promise is Jesus Christ. He is like Moses in his role as a prophet who reveals God's will and as a mediator. However, Jesus is uniquely God's Son, and his mediation brings salvation from sin and eternal life, far exceeding Moses' role in leading Israel out of Egypt.

A Unique Role: Moses brought God's law and led Israel physically. Jesus brings God's grace and truth, leading us spiritually into eternal life.
Divine Appointment: This prophet wouldn't be self-proclaimed but raised up and commissioned by God, just as Jesus was sent by the Father.

The Imperative to Listen

God doesn't just promise a messenger; He issues a command. What does it mean for us to truly 'listen'?

The most crucial part of this promise is the command: 'it is to him you shall listen.' This isn't a suggestion; it's a divine imperative. It means more than just hearing the words; it requires obedience, belief, and full trust.

Obedience is Key: To listen to this prophet is to obey God's commands as revealed through him. This was the standard for Israel and remains so for us.
