God declares that the priests and Levites have no inheritance in the land because the LORD Himself is their inheritance. Their sustenance comes directly from what is set apart for God, reminding us that true provision often comes not from earthly possessions, but from direct communion with Him.
“The Levitical priests, all the tribe of Levi, shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel. They shall eat the LORD’s food offerings as their inheritance. They shall have no inheritance among their brothers; the LORD is their inheritance, as he promised them. And this shall be the priests’ due from the people, from those offering a sacrifice, whether an ox or a sheep: they shall give to the priest the shoulder and the two cheeks and the stomach.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God is explaining how the Levitical priests, who have no land inheritance like the other tribes, will be provided for. Instead of owning fields or plots of land, their sustenance will come directly from the sacred offerings and portions designated for the Lord's service. This arrangement ensures their livelihood is tied to their ministry and the people's faithfulness in bringing tithes and offerings.
Imagine being told you have no inheritance in the land. Not a plot of land, not a family farm. How would that feel?
In ancient Israel, land was everything. It represented stability, provision, and a place within the community. Yet, God declares that the priests and Levites, the entire tribe dedicated to His service, would receive no land inheritance with the rest of the tribes.
This wasn't a punishment, but a radical reorientation of their entire lives. Their portion, their inheritance, was to be God Himself and the sacred provisions that belonged to Him. This set them apart, making their dependence on God and the people's faithfulness to Him paramount.
If you couldn't rely on land or a typical job, where would your provision come from? This verse points to an extraordinary source.
The Levites were to 'eat the LORD’s food offerings as their inheritance.' This means they were sustained by the portions of sacrifices and tithes that God designated for the priests and Levites. These weren't just leftovers; they were sacred provisions, set apart by God.
This arrangement had a dual purpose:
